Project Brief
Connect is an interactive digital art installation designed for metro carriages, addressing the problem of social isolation in public transport. The installation make ordinary handrails touch-sensitive: when a passenger grabs a handrail, a unique color lights up at the point of contact and travels visibly up the pole to the ceiling, where it is displayed through LED strips. When multiple passengers touch different handrails at the same time, their colors blend together on the ceiling, creating a shared, collective visual experience. Rather than asking passengers to change their behavior, Connect works through an action they already perform, to create a moment of connection between strangers.
The project requirements are:
- Create an experience inside a metro that connects people and increases social interactions through digital art installations
- Installation should not be harmful to anybody under any circumstances
- Experience should be accessible for everybody
- Comply with the following EU Directives:
- Mandatory adoption and use of the International System of Units (The NIST International Guide for the use of the International System of Units)
- Use open source software and technologies.
- Maximum budget for the prototype is 100 €.
